View Full Version : possible Arabian Tahr
As promised in a previous thread, here are a few shots of the putative tahr. Bit grainy and small but it was far away for a 400mm lens. Any comments on the identity of this gratefully received.

Great sighting, hard to see but it does look like a Juv Tahr.Tahr have long reddish-brown hair, with a dark stripe down their back and short, goat-like, stubby horns. Older males sport a beard, which is absent in the younger animals. The calves are grey in colour at birth, changing to greyish-brown around the same time when the horns start to grow.
Thanks for the comments, Stephen.
I know of no other recent records of Tahr from JH (save for one I saw with Dave Clarke and Nick Moran in Sept 2006 near Green Mubazzarah), nor for any elsewhere in the Hajars. If any one else can fill me in, I would be very interested.

As far a I know a few tahr has been released into the JH Wildlife Sanctuary System, possibly by the office of the HH the President of the country. The specimens supposedly came from Sir Baniyas Island where there was a small captive breeding population I saw it back in the late 1990s. Good luck with the Tahr. Reza Khan
