White-eyed Gull AND that weird white-eyed black-headed thing, Reza?

Not only is White-eyed Gull a serious rarity, but that black-headed gull looks VERY interesting - similar to Laughing / Franklin's Gull.

Reza - do you have any more photos of either bird?

    Hi all

The bird labelled 'WHITE-EYED GULL' looks like a very strong contender for a 2nd summer Franklin's Gull! This species was recently recorded for the first time in Egypt and has previously been recorded in Israel so it certainly gets to the Middle East.

I would expect Laughing Gull to have a larger 'hood', longer bill and more smoky-grey upperwings, though Mark is right that this species needs to be considered. Another (outrageous?!) species to rule out might be Relict Gull... though frankly (sorry!) it looks much better for Franklin's!

The reason I suggest 2nd summer is that an adult Franklin's should have less extensive black in the primaries, with each primary tipped white. The legs should/could be brighter in an adult too. Note: Franklin's Gull is normally considered a 2-year gull (i.e. 2nd summer and adult are identical) but I have found a note on a UK gull website saying "sometimes a 3-year gull" (http://www.freewebs.com/merseybirder...cationpage.htm). I'll check up in Gulls.

As Mark says, more pics would be really useful if you have them Reza, particularly any that show more of the upperside.

White-eyed Gull is dark brown above (as Sooty Gull).

    Reza,

Well done! This is an amazing record if it is proven to be a Franklin's Gull, but can I clarify something, please? Your initial post lists:

    400+ Sooty Gull
    1 White-eyed Gull
    100+ Little Tern
    2 YL group Gull
    11 Slender-billed Gull
    6 Sanderling
    1……BH Gull with white eye-ring

I assume these are separate birds. Which bird is the one in the photos labelled "White-eyed Gull"? If this is the BHG with the white eye-ring, do you have any pictures of the White-eyed Gull, as this is almost as rare in the UAE! If not, did you note a description of it?

one has real white, broken white eye-ring with black head, in water and on wings. the other one is a featureless YL like gull on the beach.
