    Whimbrels - get looking!

This link is well worth a look - this taxa of Whimbrel was off the radar for a very long time indeed but is alive (and hopefully well) and fair game ANYWHERE in the Middle East. Moreover, it appears not to be too tricky to ID. Whimbrel is clearly taken for granted here with few images in the galleries but this is something on which the birders in the UAE just maybe make a very valuable contribution. Get checking those underwings!

Thanks a lot to Peter for bringing this to my attention.

Good point Oscar. This is exactly why I tried to get the underwing of the Safa Park bird in 2008

Have been looking for these since I lived in eastern Zaire

Khor Al Beida supports a decent population of Whimbrels and I have taken a good many photos of them, especially in small groups. Unfortunately from the pictures I have retained, I cannot see a single one that has the underwing colouring(or lack of it) that would indicate a Steppe Whimbrel. I will of course be paying more attention in future. By the way, I also see and hear airborne Whimbrel passing Jadaf on the Dubai Creek, flying towards RAKWS. I'm on the lookout!

Stand by for H's trademark "blizzard of birds" images.

Hope to get a blizzard - sorely needed for the Gallery. Flight shots, Howard?
