Photos of UAE damselflies and dragonflies

There are 26 species of damselflies and dragonflies known to occur in UAE.

This checklist is based on 'An Updated Illustrated Checklist of Dragonflies and Damselflies of the UAE' by Gary R. Feulner, Robert W. Reimer and Richard J. Hornby - Tribulus: Vol 17 2007

Most of the common names are takes from Walker & Pittaway (1987) or Dijkstra & Lewington (2006). Names from the latter is shown in parenthesis ( ).

When photographing damselflies and especially dragonflies it is very tempting to go for the dramatic 'up-the-nostrils' photos. These views are not always the best for species identification, so if at all possible try to supplement with photos of
- wing venation (pattern)
- clear shots of the pterostigma (black marking often present near the wingtip)
- photos of abdominal shape and pattern
