Hi Keith, I think that this is a Little Green Bee-Eater. The Blue-Cheeked has a rusty red throat patch. This is a photo I got last year in Mushrif Palace Gardens. Not a great photo but you can see the difference.
The first time that I saw a Little Green Bee-Eater I had exactly the same reaction given the amount of blue on the head.
I am no twitcher yet Tim I have just started I was good at photography and decided to concentrate on Birds. I am learning. Been around the world a bit and as I reach 60 next Tuesday I will be free to do more travel. I am going to the UK tomorrow for a week or two but will return.
I only thought it was a Blue Cheeked Bee Eater cos it had Blue Cheeks but I am learning that Names of Birds don't always correspond to the what you see. so its a learning curve.
But thanks for pointing it out I now know and as I have been to see the same 3 pairs 3 times this week I will share this with you.
